Melrose House

Melrose House- Overview

Melrose House, counted among one of the last of its kind, is a surviving grand home in Nelson, New Zealand. Surrounded by a private spacious garden, the House sits close to Nelson’s city centre in all its Victorian grandeur. The historic house is now owned by the Nelson City Council and is managed by a charitable society; and the good thing is that with the refurbishments that it got over the years ensure that Melrose House will continue to remain open to the visitors in the future.

Melrose House – The Classic Beauty

The house is a beauty; just a look at its polished native rimu timber floors and high ceilings embellished with crystal chandeliers, will make you fall in love with it. Many of its other classic features include sash windows, fire surrounds and the timber staircase’s ornate balustrade. And if that was not enough the place offers striking views from every window, either that of its gardens or the treetops-silhouetted sea.

Its extensively sheltered and private gardens which surround the House are home to various specimen trees and shrubs which are of historic importance. In case you want to have a tour, the self-tour garden map will be adequate to help you around.

Melrose House – Its Multifaceted Existence

At present, Melrose House also acts as the perfect place for weddings, cocktail parties, meetings and events of both literary and musical origins plus birthdays and other special occasions.  In addition to this, the historic house also has a café named Melrose House Café which provides elegant dining, coffee and cake, high teas, and gourmet catering by arrangement.
