Routeburn Track - Overview

Routeburn track is a 32 km long scenic track that slithers through huge valleys, massive mountain cliffs, magnificent fjords and an endless number of jewel-like tranquil tarns and alpine gardens; it also connects the two national parks- Fiordland and the Mount Aspiring. While on this world-acclaimed tramping track, hikers will encounter a range of splendid landscapes that will undoubtedly, leave them astounded, so brace yourself for a par-excellent hiking experience.

Great for Bird-Watching!!

The forested sections of the Routeburn Track are heaven for native birdlife. That said, visitors here will find prolific varieties of native birds such as Robins, Fantails, Yellowhead, Parakeet, Wood Pigeons and the world’s only Alpine parrot, the Cheeky Kea.

A Hiker’s Heaven!!

The Routeburn Track has been classified as a “Great Walk” by the New Zealand Department of Conservation. The same department also maintains a couple of huts along the track, namely the Routeburn Hut, Routeburn Falls Hut, Mackenzie Hut and a Howden Hut. A hiking trail through the track is basically divided into 3 different segments; the first one starts from Routeburn Shelter and ends at Routeburn Falls Hut; the second one leads visitors from Routeburn Falls Hut to the lake Mckenzie Hut; while the third and the last one starts at lake McKenzie hut and ends at the Divide.

Take a note that there is also an emergency shelter for hikers just next to the Harris Saddle; the Harris Saddle is the highest noted point of the Routeburn track.
