Hamilton Gardens

General Overview of the Hamilton Gardens

Hamilton Gardens is one of the best attractions of the city and is webbed with paths that leads to more than 18 uniquely themed garden. It is often mistaken by visitors as a botanical garden, but actually it is not. The main concept behind the Hamilton Gardens is to express the history, growth, and development of gardens over the span of time and across different cultures.

The theme parks are comprised of an Italian Renaissance Garden, a Chinese Scholars Garden, American Modernist Garden, New Zealand’s Maori Horticulture Garden, Te Parapara and several others. These gardens are so accurately designed as per their particular country’s culture that walking through them gives a profound feeling of time-travel.

Hamilton Garden Art Festival

Every year, Hamilton Gardens hosts a two-week long street program featuring art, dance, writers, music, theater and circus. A unique space is allotted to each and every performance. The festival has gained so much popularity that it is now a key part of the city’s summer calendar.

Note that back in the 1980s, the Hamilton Gardens director, Dr. Peter Sergel sketched out the individual theme of these parks, and today, over the span of 30 years, they are almost identical to the designs in Sergel’s sketchbook.
