KareKare Beach- Auckland

KareKare, Auckland – Overview

Film fanatics will immediately recognize KareKare from its black sand which was seen in the dramatic opening scenes of The Piano movie. This place is so big that you will never feel trapped in; even in summer, the number of travellers increases profusely even though the road is steep and has no shops to stop for a meal etc.

The energetic waves at the black shore make it a great swimming and surfing spot, however, since there are strong rips and undertows, one should go in only if the surf patrol is operating. Fit walkers will also not be disappointed as there is enough to explore. However, when it comes to the southern end of the beach and past the point, one is advised to go ahead only at low tide as getting back becomes difficult when the water comes in. Its sunsets retain their spectacular charm all over the year.

  • Amenities: Lifeguards in summer and picnic areas.
  • Best for: Surfing, swimming and walking.
