Owlcatraz is a wildlife park that is situated in the Southwest region of Palmerston North. This place is deemed a heaven for bird-watchers and sight-seers; it is home to wonderful creatures and is widely acclaimed for housing several endangered bird species like the North Island’s Weka; the picture-perfect Lake Owlsmere; and the magnificent “glow worm” cave complex-the Wairuru Caves. Though, children of 8 years or below are restricted to enter the Wairuru caves, they can still have their fair share of the fun on the miniature train.
The Owlcatraz is a great place to experience a fact fantasy and fun for everyone, regardless of their age. A walking trail through the park will bring forth encounters with rare animal species in this beautiful native bush and farmland setting. That said, you will find rare animals like the New Zealand’s native owl (Morepork), huge ostriches, beautiful red deers, friendly Jerusalem donkeys and the Oha Kune pigs.
Owlcatraz offers its young visitors an impressive train ride through the most popular areas of the wildlife park (only if weather permits). Likewise, visitors can feed eels and ducks at the Lake Owlsmere or harness the nature’s creativity at the startling “glow worm” caves.
