Requirements for Booking a Hertz Car Hire in NZ

  • Required Documents

    A valid Driver’s Licence held for a minimum of 12 months for most cars, a Credit Card in the name of the driver, National ID proof, and passport are required at the time of the car rental pick-up. Travellers from foreign countries are required to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP).

  • Age Requirements

    The minimum driver’s age requirement is 21 years. Some restrictions may apply for larger car categories. A Young Driver Surcharge will be applicable for drivers between 21-24 years.

  • Payments & Deposits

    A Credit Card in the name of the driver will be asked by the rental associate at the time of pick-up. It is required for the security deposit amount. The amount held by the supplier is refunded after the return of the vehicle.

Yes, you can easily modify or cancel your Hertz car rental booking for New Zealand. Head to the ‘Manage Booking’ section on our website. Enter your email and booking number to proceed further. Cancellations made at least 48 hours before the pickup are free of charge through us.

The car rental return process when hiring a car from Hertz is fairly straightforward. In cases of airport car rentals, the return address will be the same as the pickup. And if you have collected the hired vehicle from city/downtown/station branches, the drop off will be the same as well. You won’t have to worry about anything when booking with us, as the detailed Hertz car rental return procedure will be specified in the Rental Confirmation Voucher.

If you return the rental car after the scheduled drop-off time, a late return or ‘rental deviation’ fee will be applied by the supplier. The renter will be charged the local daily rate, plus an extra fee if they are more than 12 hours late to return the vehicle. This fee can be avoided if you notify the rental desk in advance in case your plans change last minute.

Upon collection of the car, an estimated security deposit of 500.00 NZD will be blocked on the driver’s credit card. This deposit is determined by Hertz considering the applicable excess amount and selected car category. Additional drivers can be easily added to your Hertz car hire deal when booking with us. You can refer to the terms and conditions as well for updated information regarding Hertz’s additional driver policy. Usually, spouses are permitted to drive the rented vehicle at no extra charge. It’s best to confirm the same with the supplier during pick-up.

You can rent a car at the airports, downtowns, and train stations, and in some cases, there is also the option for hotel delivery. Most commonly, customers prefer renting cars at airports and downtown areas of New Zealand’s main cities, such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, and Dunedin. Yes, Hertz allows hired vehicles to be returned at a location different from the pick-up. One way car rentals incur an additional ‘drop off fee’ which varies by distance and location. You can simply add your preferred route details, along with duration, in the booking widget to check availability.

Tolls can be paid through Hertz New Zealand or through the official website www.tollroad.govt.nz. If traveling through a tolled motorway and not using the official NZ website for toll payment, Hertz will charge $6.90 per rental for the toll, regardless of how many toll trips occurred during the rental.

Hertz permits multi-island travel by making two separate bookings for the whole journey, one for each island. Single bookings that include rentals on both islands are not possible. Multi-island hire will incur an estimated $46 Airport/Ferry Terminal fee upon pick-up on the second island.

For instance, if traveling from the North to South Island, you can collect the rented vehicle from any preferred location on the North Island, and return it at Wellington Interislander Ferry Terminal. And after reaching the South Island pick-up at Picton Interislander Ferry Terminal and return to any preferred location on the same island. The process for traveling from the South to North Island is simply reversed.

Yes, Hertz follows NZ law, which requires a current foreign driver’s licence in another language to be accompanied by an English translation or an International Driving Permit. It is recommended that you arrange a translation before arriving to collect a vehicle – this will eliminate delays or potential refusal to provide you with a vehicle.
